Day 1419 – Opportunity

Hours of Daylight – 9:29
As i warmed the car up this morning i was greeted by the news that the second mars rover, “Opportunity” had landed and was already sending images back to earth. Dunno about the rest of the people around me, but i am positively jazzed when i look at images of another planet. We have two big mobile tonka-toys equipped with cameras and x-ray spectrometers and assorted other tools sitting on the surface of another world. Doesn’t change the price of Starbucks coffee at the supermarket, but it’s still cooler than cool.

Speaking of opportunity, lately i hear Cate Blanchett’s voice in my head when, as Galadrial, she whispers, “The world has changed….” Ordway Center is shopping for a new ticketing system, and once again there may be a chance for big change.

I will never forget the child-like enthusiasm in Scott’s voice when, four years ago, he outlined his goals for the Fantix project. It was to be something entirely new: an open-source ticketing and fundraising solution that would be freely given to arts organizations around the world. The newly formed company that produced Fantix would cover its costs by offering installation and support contracts.

Within about of year of his telling me all those plans the whole project was dead.

But now that Ordway’s current ticketing solution is reaching the end of its life some of the concern that spurred Fantix is returning. Opportunity has returned and how it will play out has yet to be decided.
