Day 298 – Might as Well Jump

Hours of Daylight – 9:41

AnserPerhaps they ran out of “w’s?” But that’s not what i want to talk about. Let’s focus on jobs. Yesterday it was announced a consortium led by the Minnesota corporation Super-Valu had acquired Albertsons. I sort of chuckled when i first heard this. I lived in MN for 5 winters and never went to a Super-Valu store even once. The SV nearest to where we lived was basically a “ghetto grocer” located on Lake Street in one of the most preposterous shopping plazas ever conceived. My wife went in there once on whim and reported the store was filthy dirty, the prices (as in most impoverished neighborhoods) were much higher for staples, and there was a disturbing odor.

So, SV buys Albertsons. Albertsons is headquartered here in Boise. According to different sources about 2,069 people work at the various logistics, operations, and data centers here. Albertsons has been headquartered here for a long time and given the nature of the job market here it’s not hard to imagine at least a handful of the men and women working for Albertsons are multi-generational. But, be that as it may, Albertsons now has a new master who has logistics, operations, and data centers in Minnesota. While the early public line has been “Supervalu intends to keep some presence in Boise” one has to wonder how this merger will actually shake out.

Employment is forefront in my mind right now because after months and months of reading jobs lists, sending resumes, fretting and fuming, and struggling to work on my personal projects, on one day last week I received a call from Albertson College that they wanted to see me again and received an offer of employment from the State of Idaho. After so many months, that events would come together not only on one day, but literally within minutes of each other still amazes me.

Skipping to the end of the current page, i took the Albertson interview, and, afterward, declined the offer from the state. In other words i jumped off the cliff. I’ve not heard anything back from Albertson, so that means i still in freefall. And, as we all know, it’s not the fall that kills you – it’s the sudden stop. So, will it be a nice Hollywood stuntman’s airbag at the bottom or will it be rocks and rushing icy water? At this moment you know what i know.
