Day 944 – Almost

This cold/virus/whatever sets the new record. Well, actually maybe it ties. Years ago in New York i had a horrible cold that actually put me in bed, as in “cannot stand up” for three solid days. It took the rest of the week and most of the following week to come back to life. I missed a full week of work for a boss for whom “world class bastard” was a matter-of-fact compliment. Once i made it back to work he grumbled openly in meetings and soon dispatched a memo stating any employee who misses more than a day out sick, with or without a doctor’s note, will be fired and all unemployment claims will be contested.

I’m not kidding. The guy was a psychotic freak who did indeed eventually kick my ass out the door and change the locks.

He was also a brilliant editor and writer who ran a business on his own and put his kids through Vassar. Fucker. He might be dead by now. One less angry New Yorker.

So i’ve seen first hand what it takes to be “successful” in New York. “Inhuman” is the first word i use to describe most of the “successful” people i’ve met.

Ian Holm said it best in “Big Night” after he totally fucks over the one brother and the brother asks, “who are you to do this to me?” and Holm replies, “i’m a businessman. I’m whatever i have to be.”

Leopard is installed and working well. I’ve had none of the minor problems users are grousing about on MacFixIt and elsewhere. The jury is still out on Time Machine. The UI is groundbreaking, but as one of the smartest people i’ve ever met once said “it’s not the backup, it’s the restore.” I’m not 100% convinced the restore process is going to be as slick as the UI promises. Granted the idea of Time Machine is solid, i’m not certain the mechanism of hunting for a file visually will be as useful as advertised. I plan to test it at the end of this coming week when i’ve built up several weeks of backups. I’m fairly sure Time Machine will be responsible for a spike in hard drive sales.

In other news my motorcycle has come home. Three weeks away at the spa down Orchard Street. Oh the excuses i was given. “we ordered the wrong part” “we don’t have the tool we need” “we have to order additional parts.” It’s only coincidence that i was away for one week and sick for one week that i didn’t go down to the shop and raise a stink. However the story has a very happen conclusion: all the work was covered under warranty! All i paid for was an oil change (i opted for 100% synthetic so it was a +$100 oil change). But I cannot gripe too loudly as my bike is back, the final drive is no longer leaking, and i haven’t forgotten how to ride. Even with snot running down my nose and blowing back across my cheek, riding the bike, rather than driving a car, is a singular pleasure that i missed more than i knew.

Ok, that’s all for now. First Red Cross meeting tomorrow at Thomas Hammer downtown at 7:30 in the blessed AM. We’ll see what comes of it.
