Today was the day… well, actually i suppose yesterday was the day given the time difference between Idaho and CERN. But yeah, it was started up. The LHC is alive. The Times has the story here. Just about every news organization on the planet has something to say.

It will take time to ramp up to full-power tests, but today is a great day for theoretical particle physicists all over the world. Do i believe anything bad will happen? Not at all. Do i think this might be one of the defining moments in human history? Yes. Do i think the inescapable temptation to invoke the Half Life series is juvenile? Of course. Will that slow me down for one moment? Hell no.

Remember… in particle physics just as in quantum physics there is always an element of uncertainty.
