Day 1428 – Smitten

Just you ordinary dinner scene.
Just another ordinary dinner scene. Not.

“Vicky, Christina, Barcelona” is not a great movie, but that’s not important. I largely agree with the critics who gave it generally positive, but occasionally scathing, reviews. I see this as classic “late Woody Allen.” The plot was never meant to be a gut-wrenching treatise on the soul and the nature of love in a coldly indifferent universe. It’s smaller story that opens, unfolds and closes like most of us dream summer should be. I applaud Mr. Allen’s ability to keep the overall feel light and airy, but not fluffy and vapid. Simultaneously he avoided going dark and weighty.

So here’s the thing: i am simply in love with the character of Vicky ably fielded by Rebecca Hall. There are three reasons for this.

  1. She’s supremely beautiful with a distinctly nerdy vibe (i’m extrapolating this from two viewings of the film and some photo research)
  2. She read the words Mr. Allen gave her with a heartfelt honesty that just killed me. To see a woman so beautiful speaking lines only Woody Allen could have written (nobody else sounds quite like Woody Allen) was a magnificent experience in contrasts.
  3. Despite the fact her character is equally important as Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall does not appear on the marketing materials for the film nor in the marque image.

Ok, that last one’s a little lame, but i can help but wonder why she was excluded while both Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz (along with Ms Johansson) got the nod. I’m sure there’s a website out there listing a plethora of possible reasons.

I didn’t recognize Ms Hall despite seeing her in The Prestige and The Wide Sargasso Sea. I suspect this is because i’ve been smitten by Vicky, not Ms Hall. So there you have it. I find beautiful women who speak like Woody Allen extremely attractive.
