Day 199 – Lassen Volcanic National Park

I’m about one week late, but i’ve finally assembled a slideshow (everybody loves slide shows, right?) of our recent trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park. For anybody unfamiliar, Lassen is only about 136 miles from Ashland in northern California. It’s part of the volcanic legacy of the cascade range and has some unique features. First, it’s an old park which gives it a nicely worn feeling. Then there are some natural features that i’d never heard before: the steam venting from the “Big Boiler” is the hottest of any non-erupting volcanic vent in north america; the dacite rocks strewn about after the last eruption are the among the youngest rocks in north america – less than 100 years old. The list goes on, but i’ll shut up and get right to the pictures.

The photos are pretty big… so if you’re on a slow connection they might take a moment to download. But… once they load you can click the fullscreen button (the little box with the arrow) and you’ll get the full effect.
