Day 1,523 – Six Months Old Today

Kaylee pauses for a photo op

Today is Kaylee’s birthday. She’s six months. Last weight check put her at 78 pounds.

This morning, perhaps in celebration of her birthday, she did something new: levitated onto me in bed. Our cat Mora taught me about quadruped levitation; where the animal in question does a four-legged standing jump and pops up on a shelf, or some other modest high spot. The animal remains horizontal in flight; all four paws land simultaneously.

Yes, without any warning, Kaylee went from looking at me beside the bed, to on top of me. Ooof.

I thought i might mark this auspicious moment to offer additions to the regular puppy guidelines to cover livestock guardian dogs such as Kaylee.

Number One: “If your puppy mouths or bites, make a very loud, high-pitched sound. This will startle the puppy and make them realize the behavior is not appropriate.”

For dogs like Kaylee the second sentence would read “This will confirm the puppy’s intention to ascertain what jaw-pressure is required to make a human yelp.”

Number Two: “If the puppy exhibits unwanted behavior, turn your back and ignore the puppy. Puppies want to please their masters and withholding attention will quickly eliminate bad behavior.”

Uh huh. “This will demonstrate to the puppy exactly what behavior will cause the annoying human to disengage and thus allow the puppy to pursue their original agenda.”

More to come. Count on it.
