Day 1429 – Final Opinion
I’ve now been using my new laptop for just under one week. The correct video adaptor arrived Friday and works exactly as expected. That is to say i’m now getting the correct 2560×1600 resolution on my aging cinema display.
So…. what’s the final opinion? To totally geek out, the opinion is Frakkin’ Great.
I had been toying with different ways to replace my original 17″ at some point. I had pretty much decided i’d keep the 17″ for general purpose use and in-the-field photography, but add a Big-Ass PowerMac at home for “real” work and to avoid all the plugging and unplugging i was subjecting the laptop to as i hauled it from home to the office and back home. However the inconvenient timing of annette’s laptop walking out of her apartment sort of forced the issue.
There was a moment when i though: abandon the laptop, get a kick-ass powermac, and just deal with being “landlocked.” But that moment came and went and i opted for the new 17. No regrets. None. No buyer’s remorse, no looking back, no wishing for a do-over. Especially now that it’s driving my cinema display with great aplomb and hardly getting warm to the touch.
So there you have it. I miss the FW400 ports, but since i blew the extra dough on the GDrive Quad Interface externals i can switch to FW800 without dropping a stitch. This laptop is a magnificent piece of hardware, it costs the earth, but it lives up to the hype with room to spare.
In other news i simply had to get the hell out of my house earlier this afternoon. Here’s a view of the results.
